Rail freight transportation is one of the most reliable and cost-efficient methods of cargo delivery. Its relevance has significantly increased since February 2022, when major logistics operators withdrew from Russia, European countries imposed sanctions, and logistics flows shifted toward Asia.
Today, most cargo arriving in Russia from China is transported via multimodal routes: cargo is shipped by sea from Chinese ports, transshipped in Vladivostok onto rail, and delivered to the final consignee in Russia or Belarus. In addition, there are direct rail services from Mainland China through border crossings, allowing cargo to be loaded at Chinese rail terminals and transported directly to Russian stations under international transit mode without transshipment.

Key Rail Freight Directions
Rail is most frequently used as part of multimodal delivery from China: cargo is shipped by sea to a Russian Far East port, transshipped onto a train, and forwarded to the consignee’s city or station. Major Russian rail hubs include Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, and Rostov-on-Don — all situated on major junctions of the rail network, making them key logistics centers.
Another popular method of international transport is direct rail delivery from Mainland China, primarily via Mongolia and Kazakhstan:
Via Mongolia: Trains from Chinese cities like Chengdu, Hefei, Xuzhou, Jinan, Suzhou, Linyi travel through Mongolia to the Naushki station, then westward via the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Via Kazakhstan: Trains from Ganzhou, Yiwu, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Xi’an, and Changsha pass through Kazakhstan, cross at Dostyk, enter Russia via Ozyinki, and then proceed to Moscow and other cities.
A third option we use is rail delivery from ports such as Novorossiysk and St. Petersburg for imported cargo. This method is suitable for oversized or heavy-lift cargo or for large lots, ensuring delivery directly to the consignee while bypassing highways where such transport might be restricted.

Key Stages of International Rail Freight
To successfully and timely deliver imported cargo by rail, it is necessary to follow these stages of international rail freight:
Container Placement – The carrier or agent arranges delivery of the empty container to the shipper’s facility and agrees on loading schedule and securing methods.
Export Formalities – The shipper completes all required export documentation. Carrier assistance is available if needed.
Container Loading – The container is loaded and delivered to the dispatch station.
Pre-Departure – The shipment is assembled, and the container is loaded onto a rail platform or vessel for multimodal transport.
International Transport – The cargo is moved under issued transport documents to the destination station or port.
Arrival – Containers are placed in a bonded storage area (temporary storage warehouse).
Customs Clearance – Cargo is cleared with minimal time and financial costs, with our support if required.
Final Delivery – Cargo is delivered to the consignee either in the same container (carrier arranges container return) or after devanning and truck loading
Documentation
International rail freight requires a document package including: rail waybill, transport contract, cargo documents (invoice, packing list, certificates), customs declaration, and other paperwork depending on cargo specifics and origin/destination countries.

- Rail Waybill – Confirms acceptance of cargo for carriage and carrier’s delivery obligation.
- Transport Contract – Specifies terms, responsibilities, delivery times, and rates.
- Cargo Documents – Invoice, packing list, certificates of conformity, certificates of origin, phytosanitary certificates, etc.
- Customs Declaration – Provides cargo details, value, and classification for border clearance.
- Permits & Licenses – For hazardous or restricted goods, export/import licenses may be required.
- Other Documents – Powers of attorney, payment confirmations, and any additional documents required by law.
